Gaslamp Interview on QubeTubers – Live!

We’re streaming a live-play with Gaslamp interview and commentary on QubeTubers right now. Well. In a minute or three. Edit: Or more like 30 mintues, at 1pm PST. We’re not good on the time zone conversion.

And we’re on!

Go here to watch and listen: http://qubetubers.com/index.php

Will update this post with more relevance, archived links, etc when those happen. I should get back to setting up now.

Edit: And we’re off. As of like two hours ago.

But they’re going on for what looks like another 45 minutes (as of 4:15pm PST), and check out the Qubetubers work general, they’ve been doing some very good stuff for indie games and charity and general silliness. We had lots of fun rambling and not really answering questions during our interview and look forward to doing more interviews in the future. Thanks to the Qubetubers for a good time all around!

Another edit [which was edited again]:

You can watch the recorded video of Dredmor gameplay w/ audio interview overtop via this link to the youtube posting. We kinda pick up right in the middle of the action but it makes as much sense as it can. Eventually.

Meet the Team

It looks like much of the crashing is quashed (and that’s all up to Nicholas’ code-magic anyway) so I figured I’d waste time drawing a silly picture of a bunch of the folk who made Dungeons of Dredmor possible.

From left to right:

  • Nicholas: he is the master of code and creator of the original Dredmor project back in, what, 2005? He can be awfully English at times.
  • David: (that’s me!), art, content, and other silly stuff.
  • Daniel: handled much of the earlier gameplay code then became a rocket scientist or something and is doing a lot of the internal business operations and PR. The lutefisk thing is probably his fault.
  • Derek: Server-keeper, web guy; We panic and leave him voicemail when our servers crash and burn.
  • Chris: A driving force of Business Acumen, he gets the deals done.
  • Matthew: Sound and music guy. Maestro? Does that work? And did I mention you can listen to and/or buy the Dredmor soundtrack from him?

Oh, and because I neglected to include him in the picture, here’s a Dredmorified version of that punk “executive producer” Ben who filled the Steam scoreboard the day before the game came out to give all you new players a challenge to beat

Now you know who to blame.

We’ll get back to our scheduled Dredmor Bloggageddon featuring Actual Content Of Substance And Import once the release-week madness calms down a bit. Hope you’re all having fun! If you’re not, please fill our contact email inbox with the reasons why plus crash .dmp files and broken savegames.

Crashes, Cynical Brit, Feature Request FAQ

First: Crashes

There is known crashing due to problems with the SDL sound library or something. Nicholas is chained to his work station with a coffee IV (Foul Liqueur of Yog Sothoth!) and is enjoying the effects of The Motivation Stick. Ye shall receive another patch post-haste.

Cynical Brit / Total Biscuit

… did a lovely video for Dredmor. Check it out:

Wonderful stuff! (By the way, his Blade Being spell kept going to random squares because he targeted a monster directly – if you do that, the spell will get pushed off to a random tile.)

Dredmor Community Art Mutilation Pack

With the release of Dungeons of Dredmor imminent [that is: tomorrow], why not faff around a bit with silly drawings?

Have you been itching for a Dredmor skill or spell icon to use for your forum profile? We have just the potion for your condition! Do you need some hot, raw hi-res Dungeons of Dredmor paintings to use for your desktop background? We’ve got the answers to your desires. Just want to get a peek at a few random, silly images that Gaslamp Games has been kicking around? Well, you’re in luck.

Maybe you’re just a diggle-fancier; that’s OK too.

I present to you the Dungeons of Dredmor Community Art Mutilation Pack: A lean zip file filled to the brim with the delicious scrapings from my Dredmor art folders.

So go forth and use these as you will! (Responsibly?); modify these as you wish; make silly animations, memes, whatever.

(Just, like, please don’t distribute these commercially or as part of your free game/app/whatever or something. You know, common sense stuff. This is for the fans to have some fun with.)

In case you didn’t catch it the first time, the link to the zip is here.

Dredmor rc4 Teaser Shots + RPGWatch Interview

RPGWatch was kind enough to post an interview with me, RPGWatch Feature: Dungeons of Dredmor Interview. (I apologize for the number of quotation marks used; this interview was done in the midst of crunching to completion on Dredmor and I’m afraid that lack of sleep impaired my text formatting judgement.) But please check it out, as I do explain the eyebrow thing once more.

While we’re all waiting I thought I’d make the wait just a little more painful* for our fans out there by taking another pile of screenshots.

[* Waiting pains us too and we try to avoid it whenever possible. Why go slow when you can go fast? This also explains the unfortunate results of few Gaslamp Games Morale Building Nights At The Pub.]

As usual, click on the image to view the full image.

1.  2.

1. Ah, the sweet reek of the dungeon. This is the starting room. You will become very familiar with it. The build I took is tinkerer/crossbow/staff/promethean magic/astrology/blood magic/burglary: A ranged caster/archer who can deal with traps and get in and out of trouble, ideally. Let’s see how this works out.

2. Faffed around a little on level one then went rather too quickly to level two because I was feeling cocky with my strong ranged attacks. These bolas complement my build quite nicely as they will root enemies to the tile they’re on so I can launch bolts or cast Dragon’s Breath at them from afar while dealing asphyxiative damage.

… and there’s a tutorial, ya’know.

(We’re close to the end/the beginning and Gaslamp is antsy to announce a ship date. But we can’t do that just yet. Yes: working hard. Especially Nicholas with his pile of hatred incarnate, see: bugtracker todo list.)

Beta testers: We’ve finally added a tutorial! Unfortunately you’ve probably all learned everything in it through an education of pain & countless deaths.

Other people: Although we’ve made a game that’s found most people dying to drinking acid or being savaged by a horde of small bird-like animals in the first minute or so of play, we’ve been good enough to have scripted up a fun little set of tutorials to teach a bit of how to play Dredmor – using items, skills, UI interaction, and such.

As a game built on roguelike foundations the key to Dredmor is the core concept of each action taking a single “turn”. Yes, it’s a turn-based game. But there are many turns and they are taken quickly each time you do anything — take a step, execute an attack, cast a spell, drink a potion, open a door, and so on — so the flow of the game has a fluidity to it while allowing you to effectively pause the action and take your time to consider your tactical options whenever you so desire. And you will certainly need to.

Here are some shots, 1. of the tutorial list and 2. of a poor diggle that’s about to get a final education in bomb-throwing.

Now I know that you hardcore players are not about to get excited about a set of tutorials, but consider what happens when we open up the scripting that made them possible. It could allow for some very interesting possibilities both in official expanded content (which I’ll probably have a heavy hand in) and for modders who want to push the game past what we at Gaslamp ever imagined possible.

Preview Roundup 2 + Beta Madness-Vortex

Here at Gaslamp we’re in brain-rending beta vortex of madness mode. I’ll try to piece together a couple thoughts at the end of the post, but first a couple more previews:

From Gamer CredentialsDungeons of Dredmor Preview – suddenly diggles, thousands of them!

It’s hard to believe, but just about a week ago Daynab (a Dredmor beta tester) wrote up this quick preview of Dungeons of Dredmor. All I’ll say is that he’s been a big help and Dredmor has come a huge distance in this short time.

And from Paul’s 8bit Patio : Indie Test Drive : Dungeons of Dredmor Beta (Roguelike/RPG)

Paul Soares was good enough to make a video of Dungeons of Dredmor gameplay for his Indie Test Drive series in which he gives a good introduction to the variety of ways to die in the game. Check it out:

And how about a word on Beta and Crunch?

Answering Unasked Questions

I figure it would be useful to take some time to address some points of speculation raised in various forums. Oh yes, we read what you write. Wherever Dungeons of Dredmor is mentioned, we’re all over that. (Thanks Google.) But enough faffing about, I’m going to respond to a few points raised out in the Internetlands.

Well … one more bit of faffing around first.

Dredlike

Those eyebrows are out of this world.
