SOPA and PIPA

First I should say that Gaslamp Games is a company.  We sell products, and our motivations as individuals are swayed by the fact that our personal successes are tied to the successes of our company.  We have a vested interest in allowing Gaslamp to be successful.  That said, Gaslamp Games would cease to exist as the entity that you know and love if SOPA and PIPA are passed.

If SOPA passes, it requires that we censor each and every post or message within our blog posts and our forums to ensure that no piracy or hints at piracy are posted.  If we aren’t successful, we could become blacklisted and unreachable without so much as a chance to defend ourselves.  What’s more, the bills together give internet service providers the ability to make these decisions on their own, only requiring “credible evidence” of piracy-oriented content.  We simply can’t afford to police our community to a degree where we could be somewhat assured to be operating within the parameters set out by these bills.  What’s more, we don’t want to police our users.  Our community, like every other healthy community, depends upon some degree of freedom of expression.

Gaslamp’s vested interest aside, there are some very serious freedom of speech issues.  I am no expert here but I have read a lot about SOPA and PIPA over the last week or so and I strongly urge you to look into them on your own, and of course, to try to hear both sides of the story.  While it is our opinion that SOPA and PIPA are too heavy-handed in their attempt to lessen a problem which is a serious concern, it is most important that you know what is going on and have the opportunity to share an informed opinion with your government representatives.

Patch 1.0.9 Addendum: It’s Out There Somewhere

We have sent 1.0.9 off to our friends at Steam, but they are really busy right now.  As far as we are aware, the Mac version has been successfully delivered to the distribution servers, so those of you with the Mac problems we were experiencing should be able to get your fix.

As far as the Windows flavor of Dredmor 1.0.9: we sent them an extra copy just in case they left the first one in their pants pocket at home, so we are expecting it to be up sometime today.  I will edit this post when we have confirmation of it being available for download/update for everyone.  Thanks for your patience, we will get to the bottom of it.

UPDATE: Looks like Steam is slowly rolling out the 1.0.9 update.  In order to get it to update quickly it is possible to delete the local files and reinstall, but those more patient than I should have it shortly (this will not erase the save files as they are stored elsewhere).

UPDATE 2: Some users are reporting issues with existing characters experiencing a teleportation bug.  We’re working on it right now; if you do have this problem, just force-quit the game (ctrl-alt-del) and roll a new character while you wait;  it seems to only affect existing characters.  We will keep you up to date as we get more info.

Another Quick Headsup

The Dungeons of Dredmor expansion Realm of the Diggle Gods is almost up.  Unfortunately we have no clear ETA but we suspect it will either be late tonight or tomorrow morning.  Right now it appears that the issue is to do with a code package not yet being connected to the DLC on Steam’s end (if you purchase it right now, that purchase is tied to a “test app”).

Rest assured that we will let you know here and by twitter as soon as it is up.  If you have plunked down your hard-earned cash you will indeed get what you paid for: Werediggles.

We’ve Got a New Site!

And we really hope you like it.

Our first website was a labor of necessity: we needed a quick and easy way to impart some of our weird sense of personality while keeping you guys up to date on the stuff we were working on.  This time we decided to spend some time getting the site up as we always wanted it to be.  Classier, friendlier, and maybe a little more eccentric.

A tremendous “Thank You!” to the folks at Chestnut St. Pixel Foundry for putting up with our demanding requirements regarding the look and feel of the site; they did a great job of capturing the “Gaslampyness” of Gaslamp Games in the redesign of the site and rebranding of our company. (You saw the new logo, right?) Props also to their production assistant Stephanie Larsen who drew some lovely background illustrations of Dredmor paraphernalia that will appear, appropriately, at random. (Blatant plug: Go hire them and her, respectively, for your web design and illustration that needs doing.)

Also, as ever, a big thanks to Derek for the behind-the-scenes database DJing, without his work things like changing the website would be laborious hours of downtime and mass-confusion.

Expansion News: Diggle Construction Crew Begins Digging Deeper

As you may have heard, the cat is officially out of the bag: we are going to be offering a paid expansion for Dredmor.  While rumors about the possible inclusion of eyebrow-wigs are totally unfounded, evidently… um, this is something people are interested in!  We’ll do some testing involving cubes with eyebrows in physics puzzles and see what happens.  The Expansion is planned to be released before the end of the year.

As far as actual content, there will definitely be:

  • more skills
  • more monsters
  • more levels
  • more items (crafting skills, weapon types)
  • more recipes
  • and a few other *things* which we’re still keeping under wraps

One of the exciting things that is coming out of the expansion is that we are finally implementing our mod system in all its splendour and using it to implement the expansion, which means that all of the things mentioned in the above list you will be able to tinker with to your heart’s content.  We are really looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with in this regard, and hope you’ll share your creations with us!  The mod patch, which will also include our fantastic red haired heroine, should be ready for your perusal sometime next month.

“Finally, A Modicum of Legitimacy”, an exhibit in 4 pictures

Before we released Dredmor, we couldn’t afford desks, chairs, unbroken microphones, computers less than ten years old, wireless signal that went more than seven feet, or even mice that weren’t trackballs:
