Dungeons of Dredmor is now available for Windows and 32-bit/64-bit Linux on Desura! Yes, that’s right, we’re on the best thing to come out of Australia since Mann Co. Buy it now, play it on Windows, and enjoy the Linux version as soon as the Desura client for Linux is out of beta testing. (They tell me that this should be any day now.)
Better yet, we’ll sweeten the pot! Click this button, and get Dungeons of Dredmor for 10% off – this week only! That’s right – you can go out and buy yourself Dungeons of Dredmor for only $4.49.
Nice to see it somewhere other than Steam, but what’s with the $=£ thing? You say it’s $4.49 ($4.99 usual price) but the price I’m seeing is £4.49 (£4.99) which is more like $7 ($7.86)! Do you get to set the prices or is this all the Desura guys doing?
Actually, now that I reread your question, I can honestly say, “Huh, weird. Why don’t I ask”.
Now I re-read my question I sound really rude, sorry about that. I guess I was feeling indignant at the time. The price thing isn’t much of a problem for me as I bought the game from Steam a couple of months ago (didn’t know if it was ever coming out anywhere else). It’s a bit weird though…
According to this post in this thread…
http://www.desura.com/forum/thread/cost-differences-between-usdeurgbp/#696300
…it’s up to the developers. Desura provides either price matching (currency converted and rounded up to the nearest pretty looking number) or regional pricing so I guess it’s an option you can change if you want.
Thanks, we’ll request they change this.
This should now be rectified, thanks for bringing this up!
Ah yes, the price on the little button in the post has changed (I’ve been refreshing this page every couple of days because I was following the comments thread). Thanks guys!
Might just buy it again on Desura so I can stop using Steam… want to make sure that the expansion’s going to be released on as well though. Too many devs are releasing Steam only expansions these days. ;o;
Can anyone clarify if this Desura thing requires DRM? I try to avoid downloading games on Steam unless they’re absolutely not available elsewhere. Which is why I was crossing my fingers when I saw this game coming out for Linux, most Linux games don’t bother/can’t effectively implement DRM.
However, I’ve never heard of Desura before, and clicking around on the site does not make it clear what, if any, restrictions are in place. I understand I’d have to install the client to download the game, but can I uninstall Desura and continue to run Dredmor? Can I back up Dredmor, and reinstall it without Desura?
Just trying to figure this stuff out. Thanks.
You can just copy the Dredmor game folder out of the installation directory and run it from wherever you want without running Steam or Desura.
The only issue is that you would miss the patching, but provided you pay attention to this blog (or our twitter, … or random people) you could just run Steam/Desura for the patches when they hit.
In short, there’s no DRM in Dredmor hooking you into any of these distribution services.
Perfect! Thanks for the explanation.
Really? I can copy Dredmor out of my Steam dir and it will still work? You’ve just lost one sale, since I was hoping to re-buy it in hopes of making it portable 🙂
In addition to Dredmor not having any DRM, the Desura client has no built in DRM of it’s own. Any game you download you can run normally while offline or without the Desura client even running at all.
Individual games however, may have their own DRM scheme if they so choose.
Aarrgghh! More waiting, now for the Desura client for Linux 🙂 Are you considering simple web stores (pay, download & start playing) like Gameolith.com or Indiavania.com?
I thought about asking this, but I though about it and sort of came up with an answer on my own. As the game is still being actively developed, patch distribution would be more complicated for those users.
Perhaps once the game is ‘finished’ they’ll release it on conventional download platforms. I’m really grateful that they decided against using the Steam DRM though.
Great, approval to join to Desura Linux Beta was granted within 12 hours 🙂 Bought the game & installing now!
Is there any way to transfer or redeem our Steam purchase to Desura?
I second this question.
We’re looking into this right now; I feel like we will be able to accommodate this request somehow, but we may have to do it… by hand (oh god no!) I’ll fill you in as I get more details
Wow, Gaslamp Games has to be possibly the most generous, attentive and accommodating developer I’ve ever come across (maybe tied with Wadjet Eye Games). I just want you guys to know that it’s very much appreciated!
Hmm. As a poor college student, I was hesitant to simply buy it again, but heck it’s 50 cents off! You guys deserve more then the five bucks I originally paid anyways. I’ve been following Desura’s Linux progress for weeks anticipating that you would choose them.
I’m very disappointed with this. I clicked the button that said “buy now” thinking I could buy now. I filled out the form and entered my credit card information and so on. Can I have my game?
No, I have to create a stupid “account” first, including agreeing to some terms of service that are actually pretty horrifying – have you read them, in particular the bit about how I’m supposed to be financially responsible for all activity on my account regardless of whether I had anything to do with it? Okay, so I did that. Can I have the game now?
No, I have to download and install a client. Can I have the game now?
No, that wasn’t really the client, that was the installer for the client. When I run it it has to download the *actual* client before putting up its login screen. So I log in. Can I do that?
No, it says the Linux client is in beta and I have to go to such-and-such Web page. So I do that.
Now it says “your request to join the group has been sent.” Eventually, someone might approve it.
What’s really offensive about jumping through these hoops is that every one of them was supposed to be the LAST step. If I had known in advance that it would involve so many steps, I’d be less disappointed – though in fact if I’d known it would involve quite this many steps, I’d have said “Okay, I’ve waited so long already, I’ll just wait until they’re actually ready to sell me the game, and give them my money THEN (if I still feel like it).”
Next time, I’ll wait for the release that comes as an actual file I can download, and does not involve a “client.” It is precisely because of this kind of thing that Linux users like me are resistant to the idea of buying things that require a “client,” and you’ve only confirmed my prejudices.
“and enjoy the Linux version as soon as the Desura client for Linux is out of beta testing”
Linux users like you? You mean the kind that can’t read? Seems like that’d be a fairly small percent.
Someone needs a hug!
By now you’re the only reason that I have a Desura-account, even though I could’ve used WINE and Steam, I thought this game deserves being bought twice 🙂
