So. Uh. Hi there.

EDIT: Today’s patch, while fixing the random crashes for some people, has added a new one for other people. We’re on it. Please keep sending us your broken save files too, especially if they were entirely produced *after* yesterday’s patch. — Gaslamp Games McManagement

Hi, everybody. We’re… a little overwhelmed, and also going about with large grins on our faces. Being #1 on Steam – even if we have been cruelly deposed (for now!) by the Curse of Cthulhu Saving the World – is quite the rush. We should ship games more often. Thank you all for your support and patronage; we’re looking forward to kicking it up to the next level.

We have fixed a few bugs that came out of the woodwork. The random crash bug is fixed, a save corruption bug is fixed (there may be more), the Infinite XP glitch is fixed, and the infinite-money-in-shop glitch has been resolved as well. We will be sending a patch off to Steam as soon as we have finished testing it a little more.

….

So how is everybody enjoying the game?

    Great to know your selling copies! Enjoying the game myself,one moment i feel invulnerable, next thing i know i step on 2 traps while engaging badies, run back in fear just to step them again and bam, looking at the death screen.

    Congratulations on the Steam ranking!

    And also, congratulations on suffusing every scrap of text in the game with quirky humour. I wouldn’t have believed this was possible. It feels like you’ve stuck some kind of humouriser into the text renderer. 🙂

    It’s great to hear you are on to the issues, though they mostly seem fairly minor so far from what I’ve read. I’ve had the CTD a couple of times and lost a couple of hours play, but I can save often just in case until the patch comes out, so it’s not a big deal.

    As for the game, so far it’s lived up to all my expectations for it. There’s already a couple of things I’d like fixed or added but I’ll hit the forums tomorrow with those thoughts.

    Congratulations, you thoroughly deserves the #1 spot. This is the best indie game since Terraria.

    I love it! Holy hell it’s everything I wanted it to be and more. Tons of replay value, different things I can try, lots of numbers to crunch, and I find myself laughing constantly throughout every game! Seriously well done here fellas, we need more people like you developing games these days!

    Congratulations on making #1 on Steam! You deserve it!

    I’ve been greatly enjoying Dredmor so far. It has all the good things from traditional roguelikes, plus charming art, a great sense of humour, some interesting mechanics for skills and crafting, and lutefisk. Dying horribly has never been so much fun!

    …also, one of my captcha words is Valve. Coincidence, or sinister plot?

    Absolutely loving the game. I knew right away that this was going to be a game to wait for. It’s got all the elements of roguelike combined with the right amount of Graphics and memes to grab a huge audience. Add on a low cost to the game even without the 10% discount and you have alot of people diving straight into it.

  8. Rogue says:

    The game took me completely by surprise, i’m lucky to check steam often. I’m a huge fan of rpgs in general, and roguelikes in particular.

    I love you guys for all the subtle things that you put into the game, they expose that some or all of you go way back with rpgs. Two of my favorites are the teleport potion with “Whereever you go, there you are” (dungeon master wall text), and lutefisk for the lutefisk god! (too obvious, I won’t say where thats from).

    I also applaud you for all these excellent uncommon skills such as fleshcraft and mathemancy. I will be enjoying this for a long time =D

    Thank you for this wonderfull game!

    One question: Can i sell stuff? Or is there a upgrade for the inventory?

    Wish you a lot of success 😉

    { reply }
    • Mission Possible says:

      Yes, you can sell. When you find Brax (I think that’s his name), who you can identify by his checker suit and the items on counters look of the store, pick up items from your inventory and click on him to sell.

      So far as I know, there is no way to upgrade the inventory, but I haven’t made it all that far yet.

    So after staying up till 3am to buy Dredmor the moment it came out (Aus) then playing it till 6 despite assuring myself i’d just play “for a few minutes to test it out” I’ve gotta say you knocked out a stellar game. A few UI quirks exist but that’s pretty much the extent of any issues i’ve had myself. (one criticism – a quicker way to pick stuff up would be awesome, rather than drag and drop to the inventory every time…) But congrats hope it does awesome! It sure deserves to.

    { reply }
    • Joel says:

      You actually can click on an item and click on your character with the item to immediately drop it into the inventory.

      I only got to play it a bit but I am really enjoying the game. Definitely worth the price of admission already. Good job guys, keep up the good work.

    Lovin’ it, but a little surprised not to find the Linux binaries. Was that idea scrapped? Or just not in yet?
    I was really looking forward to playing on my main OS, instead of only when I boot to Windows, or thru crossover (Which I am about to test….)
    Or maybe I am just not seeing them…………

        Ok, great to hear that will be happening 🙂 🙂

        But don’t stress yourself on it 🙂
        I haven’t fully tested it yet, but so far the game seems to be doing ok in crossover, so a little wait for the linux native is fine 🙂

    I love it, but the random crash bug prevents me from wanting to play, as I play on the ‘perma death’ setting, and if the game crashes without giving me an opportunity to save, it considers me dead as dead and I lose my character entirely.

    Playing on the steam version btw.

    Guys, it’s… I feel like when I was a kid… Every game was super cool, thanks to an unwilling suspension of disbelief. Nowadays I’m so much critical, disillusioned that it’s almost as depressing as Russian writing…

    But this game… Damn. It’s fun, well crafted, rich in details and flavor. It feels polished, finished… It’s intricate but accessible. I can disbelieve myself all I want but… It’s… It’s the next best thing since itself! 😀

    You should get some kind of prize. If you come at my place I will kiss you. Better yet, I will tuck you in bed with a HUGE kiss and a glass of warm milk. Since it’s starting to sound creepy I’ll stop here, but think about it!

  18. Mission Possible says:

    I’m still on the first level of the dungeon (completionist here!) and having a ball.

    Two minor quips. I picked golemn-mancy and am using it primarily. Since 2/3 of the enemies on the first level are diggles, and they make the same *SQUUEEE!* noise that the moustache golem makes AND the theurmaturgic infection makes when exploding out of corpses, I get the *SQUUEEE! sound effect every 4 seconds or so during battle.

    If I wasn’t such a completionist, I probably wouldn’t notice, as the enemies get more varied, I understand.

    Also, does the unliving wall ever disappear?

    As I said, still on the first playthrough, and still on the first level, but I’m having lots of fun!

    Oh, maybe some more flavor text on the scribbles on the dungeon wall. It appears the only one that can appear on the 1st level is something about fearing diggles for they are not your friend in nature. I think you could add a few more for kicks and humor.

    Just thoughts. If only I could get by with playing this during work…

    Glad to see that this is selling well! I think it deserves to.

    I’m a huge fan of the Roguelike genre as a whole, but there’s WAY too many games that just try to clone Hack or Angband or any of those (which tend to be somewhat similar to each other to begin with). The usual formula of super-randomized item effects, wierd gods, the same ol’ character classes, and other things grows a bit stale.

    Dredmor is everything I love about the genre smashed into one game. The combat is well thought out, the monsters are hilarious and dangerous, the difficulty is plenty high, the skill system is just excellent, WAY better than the usual “class” system, and I definitely like the way food works. I dont mind the “vitality” system alot of Roguelikes use, but it’s nice to see something different from that. And the dungeon floors are HUGE! And everything is very funny all at the same time.

    All in all, an absolutely superb game.

    I’d post some huge wall of text about how awesome it is, and how much time I’m spending-when-I-should-actually-be-working but if I did that I’d have less time to kill this persistant Enraged Diggle, so instead just assume the following text flatters and enlightens you:

    Great game

    One minor thing. I died two times when accidentally press right mouse button when near the shop keeper Brax (?) and tried to check some stuff in inventory. I pulled spell which affected Brax and he call his little boss 2^N army :-). Is it possible to implement some kind of dialog to ask player (to kill or not to kill) in such case when near a Brax ???.

  24. Mid-Boss says:

    It’s a very good light roguelike. I’m a big fan of nethack, ADOM and crawl, and even though it may not be as complex as those examples, the accessability, interface and humor definitely makes it worthwhile.

    I’d really like to see a manual and more intricate options though. =/ The fact that all you can change is music, sfx volumes and resolution is a huge bummer.

    Can anyone tell me if there is more keybindings than the skill hotkeys ( 1-0 ) and the inventory hotkeys ( shift 1-0 ), WASD and Space to pass a turn ? Did I miss any ?

    Anyway, if there won’t be a manual, at least make a proper wiki, it’s a pain to find out if there is more keybindings … or what sacrificing lutefisk actually does. I sacrificed like 20 lutefisk and didn’t notice any benefit at all.. what does it do ?

    { reply }
    • AWESOME_ says:

      It seems to me that each shrine has a counter for how much lutefisk needs to be sacrificed to it, and once you hit that value the shrine breaks and you get a magical item. The first one I did only took 5, then the second and third ones took like 13 and 16. 20 is pretty high, but if you keep going you’ll get an item for it eventually! Of course, the item may or may not be worth it, as I discovered three times…

    I can’t say, I’m too busy with the extermination of the Diggles.

    Just one issue: the inventory icons are way too small. Oh and I would be really glad if you made all the windows movable within the game. And the steam overlay doesn’t work (at least for me).

    I only found out about this game a few days before release, and I was on the fence about getting it or not. This is the first RPG in this style that I’ve played, at least precisely, but… All I know is for five bucks, this is an incredibly good deal. I know I’ve blown fifty, sixty dollars on games that I don’t like as much as this. Props doods, for making such an awesome game ^^ *Huddles up in basement and loads up game again*

  33. AAA says:

    Great game! 10/10, honestly. I think the price will grab a lot of people, hopefully roguelikes and even graphical roguelikes become more common.

    I think you understand what the most important part of a roguelike is (for me)… and indeed maybe any RPG. LOOTING.
    The looting system looks great so far, and the graphics and fully animated enemies etc. are all really nice.

    Just one thing I would have liked, online scoreboards. Maybe make it so you can only submit if you kill dredmor (so it means something) and divide by difficulty level.
    Also something to detect whether you’ve seen the welcome text when you start a new run would be nice, as after a while it gets just a tiny tad annoying. Lastly running fullscreen at 1680×1050, larger icons and larger GUI/inventory/etc. option would be nice, as it’s a little straining on the eyes.

    Thanks for a great game!

    • JumbocactuarX27 says:

      If you’re playing the steam version, they do have global leaderboards divided by difficulty & permadeath being on/off (though it seems to submit when you die instead of beat the boss?) but you have to go to the community site to see them. Hopefully they’ll integrate leaderboards into the client in the near future. I’d love to compare to my friends.

    Only played it for a few hours, but I’m loving it so far! My only complaint is the way you have to pick up items and drag them into your inventory (or belt), with every single item. I would like to be able to click on an item to pick it up and have it go to my inventory automatically.

    { reply }
    • AWESOME_ says:

      Well, you can click on your character after you click on the item to have it put in your inventory, or belt if there’s a free slot and it’s a usable item! So you don’t have to drag it all the way every time.

      Plus clicking on items nearby and then clicking on the character repeatedly makes me feel like I’m reaching out and grabbing them all.

      { reply }
  43. AWESOME_ says:

    I’ve been enjoying it. The lack of a hunger meter is pretty weird in a roguelike, but I guess that balancing it with the monster respawns kind of evens it out. It was a pretty great feeling the first time I kicked down a door and it was a monster zoo on the other side. I’m glad that my character was one focusing solely on Promethean magic and I’d just gotten the landmine spell.

    Anyway, my only complaint is just a minor bug: if you right-click to use your ability on an enemy next to you that is in the middle of their attack animation, once the animation finishes you will do a normal physical attack instead of using your ability again. As a pure mage character this has gotten me very close to killed a couple times.

    Bought it while at work on steam then downloaded it at home. Definitely enjoyed my couple of hours playing last night. I am one of those players that really does not like to leave anything behind; but the upside is that I was able to purchase a decent sword early on from all of the sales. I am looking forward to the wiki growing so that a hive mind can start collaborating on what works and what doesn’t. Three things came to mind for me last night. 1) would love if there was a way to expand or double my pack. A possible bug is that you can use your ingot grinder etc. for storage but then you run out of room when you actually want to use one of them. Is there a chest someplace I can use or can we just lay stuff on the ground and never miss it again. 2) Is everything that I find of use? i found a ruby early on that I was timid to sell since I thought I could use it if I found the right recipe. But then saving the ruby for days and months would frustrate me based on #1. I felt this especially after selling the robe i found at the front door only to realize later that on the first level you could use it in a recipe to upgrade it. 3) Is there some sort of “recall system” or to help with selling items or retrieving things stored for later. and 4) (just occurred to me) I noticed that I find extra grinders or anvil kits, but there is not a way to split them from a single one so that I do not sell all of them at once. right clicking, and combinations of alt and shift, etc. did not work. do multiple kits allow you to upgrade to a better kit requiring less material?

    a lot. just an extension of my enthusiasm.

    The only disappointing part of the game so far was in the tutorial when you equip a helmet for the first time. I very much wanted to see it affect my character’s appearance. I realize it’d be a lot of work to add in this kind of feature, but oh boy would it be freaking awesome.

    I’m loving the game so much though! Looking forward to putting off painting my house to play it some more tonight!
